Full disclosure, I did not read the first book but I was not lost. It all made sense and I enjoyed this very much.

Sully and Kit were awesome together, though there were some things I did not like such as the whole being friends with the enemy, the making fun of Sully's sex face, and the whole calling Sully's mom and then lying to him

I loved the kitty play, its so rare to get kitties and I so would read a story about a kitty and puppy playdate.
